Teaching Diary - Sense of aesthetics

Besides working so hard on the techniques, building the sense of aesthetics is very crucial in music education also.

"Do you usually listen to music? Any kind of music." This is a question I always ask my students. Some of them said "No. I never" Then I will ask them to listen to music first before you play music. Just like a chef, they have to try different cuisines before they cook. At least we have to get a concept of what music is.

Some students do not have any idea about how to polish a piece. They just read and play the notes directly or listen to what teachers say and play what teachers want. This is because they do not know what is "good" or the variety of sound. Therefore, we need to build up their sense of aesthetics and let them express more their thoughts or feelings towards the music.

Here is one tip of improving our learning progress. You can record your music and listen to it as an audience. Be honest to ask yourself about the feelings and comments. You will know more about this topic today.
