Teaching Diary - Flexibility of hands

What's our new challenge today?

Here is an example to train our flexibility of hands. Students sometimes do not know how to play the note in staccato as their wrist, shoulder and arm are so tight. Therefore, to let them know to relax these parts of the body, they have to play a ball (e.g. basketball, tennis ball) and see if they can make it at least one minute. If their wrist, shoulder and arm are not flexible enough, it is hard to make it for even few seconds. This feeling is just the same as playing the note in staccato.

Let's try! Hope that the neighbourhood won't complain us. Oops.
