Teaching Diary - Breathing

Students seldom notice their frequency of breathing when playing piano. They just pay so much attention on the notes and rhythms. But breathing is an important element to make a phrase and tension more effective.

Please don't be scared. It is not a difficult technique as breathing relates to phrase structure and tension of a piece. It comes naturally if you understand the meaning of music. In other words, like singing or speaking, you say a whole sentence within one breath; take a breath before you sing; release or exhale at the end of phrase; hold your breath when the tension increases. Therefore, all the things should work together naturally. Analysing the structure of music will let you know more about the frequency of breathing.

Before you control the frequency of breathing, you'd better practice the notes and memorise them. Let's try and let the audience feel your breath!

PS The piano in this video is out of tune. Really sorry. Oops.
