Teaching Diary - Analysis and practice
The previous chapters mentioned how to practice efficiently and how to deal with technical problems. Here will talk about how to polish a piece.
Many students only concern the fluency of notes when practicing. In fact, besides this, you can think a bit more about phrase, paragraph or even structure of a piece to enhance the quality of practice before teacher’s instruction.
Recently, an AT violin student is practicing an exam piece. He only plays all the notes out without considering its meaning. After analysing phrase structure and climactic points in each paragraph, and listening the references online, he finally says “I know what I am playing now”.
Therefore, it is good to know more about a piece through analysing and listening when you practice. This process will not only bring your practice to the next level, but also enhance your musicianship and analytical skills.
