Teaching Diary - Accent

Students, especially the beginners, are usually being educated about the concept of strong and weak beat. For example, duple time is one strong beat with one weak beat; triple time is one strong beat plus two weak beats; quadruple time is one strong beat plus three weak beats. That’s why many students try to make accents on the strong beats by their wrist or body when playing a piece. It makes a phrase not natural and choppy.

Therefore, we should consider the phrase structure first and see where the accents should be put. You will find that the accent may not be necessary sometimes or the melody keeps flowing through few bars.

Let's make it more natural than robotic.
